This article talks about experiences of racial inequalities that children and adolescents face in their everyday life. It also addresses the different social worlds that teens of diverse racial and ethnic groups experience. One part of the article that I read discusses how American teens deal with conflicts with their parents, the pressures they face from other teens, their school experiences, and their religious beliefs. After I finished reading this aricle I realized that these experiences are going to have a significant impact on teens adult lives and also their potential for social mobility. It also made me think that if people directly confronted this topic than we would have a better understanding of inequality in American life.
In this article it focuses on mixed race and inter-ethnic families that explores their understandings of race, nation and culture, and interrrogates. It talks about the influences that television and photographs have on children's ideas about race. Another thing it addresses is how children use their memories and stories to talk about the racial differences in their own families. This article does a good job of portraying the effectiveness of teaching in schools and the parental concerns over social mobility and social acceptability of their children. It states that social scientists today claim that we now live in a "post-race" society, where "race" has been replaced by ethnicity.
This article demonstrates the ways minority groups create and maintain collective identities and action. It also explains the relationships between racism in schools and unemployment. One problem it talked about is the ways social deprivation is different from racial/class status. This article discusses the West Indian involvement and how their academic activities are analysed. Another thing that the article addresses is how teens educational experiences are different from class and gender groups.
News Articles:
This article tells the story of a 15 year old boy named Seth that had a rock hurled at him by a white teenager. Seth, who is a mixed black, white and American Indian, has been called names before but that was the first time he was associated with violence because of his race. He was very shocked and didn't expect something like that would happen to him. After this story came out people were outraged and hurt. I think this story is important because our society needs to take a stand about these kind of things. It made me think that victims of these incidents are not people that are different, they are just like us.
In this article it talks about the history of racism and how it has changed over time. It gives examples of racism such as slavery, which was later accomplished. It also explains the important features of racism. One feature it discussed was peoples attitudes regarding slaves and slavery. It stated that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics. One more element that it discussed was racial separatism and how different races should remain segregated and apart from one another.
