Annotated Bibliography

Nonfiction Book-
Marcovitz, Hal. Teens & Race. Broomall, PA: Mason Crest, 2004. Print
This source was very helpful to me in learning about how racism affects teens in our society. It covers many different asspects of racism. It explains the history of racism and how diverse our generation of teens are today. This source gave me examples of what biracial teens deal with while going up, such as, schooling and finding employment. It gave me some good reasons why racism is a bad thing and how we need to stop it. I think this source has many bias information because it covers a huge controversial topic. This book is in a series of books called the Gallup Youth Survey that have been writen fairly recently. These books are sold all around the world and I think it is a very credible source. This information will help me with my research because it gave me many different examples of how teens deal with race today.

Documentary-
Davis, Kiri. "A Girl Like Me." YouTube. YouTube, 04 May 2007. Web. 01 May 2013.
This source was very helpful to me because it showed how many African American teen girls percieve themselves and others. They talk about their feelings of inferiority and their confusion about who they are and where they come from. It also explores the beliefs in our society that black people are not equal to white people. This documentary gave me many examples, such as, when the girls said that kinky hair was unattractive and that their skin was ugly. I think this source has bias in it because it only interviews black females and what their thoughts and perceptions are. I believe this is a credible source because it gives you a good idea of what teen girls go through and this documentary also was recently updated. This information will help me with my research because I will need to use the information complete my project.

Articles-
Flory, Richard. "Google Books." Google Books. Brad Christerson, 28 Apr. 2010. Web. 24 Apr. 2013
This source was very helpful because it gave me a good idea of what racial inequalities children and adolescents face in their everyday life. This article talks about how different the social worlds diverse, racial and ethnic groups experience. It gives examples of how they deal with conflicts, school experiences and the pressures they face from other teens. I think this article is bias because it discusses many controversial topics. This sourse is very credible because it gives you tons of information and examples. This information will help me with my research because it gave me some examples of racism that the research I did prior to this didn't have.

"Mixed-Race, Post-Race:." Google Books. Berg, 2003. Web. 01 May 2013.
This source was helpful because it explores mixed race and inter-ethnic families and their understanding of race and culture. It talks about how television and photographs influence childrens ideas about race. One example it explains is when children grow up, they are going to use their memories and stories about race to their own families. I think this article shares biased information because it talks about different asspects of racism. I believe this source is credible because it gives you some old information and some new. This article will help me with my research because I need this information for upcoming activities I need to do for this project.

Barton, Len, and Stephen A. Walker. "Race, Class and Education." Google Books. N.p., 8 Dec. 2011. Web. 01 May 2013
This source was helpful for me because it explains the relationships between racism in schools and unemployment. I also thought it gave me good information and made me understand it more. One example it talks about was the differences between social deprivation and racial/class status. I think this article is bias because it gives a good look at how teens of different races have hard times in schools and getting jobs. This article has also been recently updated with new information. I think this is a credible source because it makes you think how of how others are treated just based on their race. I think this article will help me with my research because it focusses a lot on the asspects of racism I want to cover for my project.

What Is Racism?" What Is Racism? Anti-Defamation League, 2001. Web. 01 May 2013
This source was helpful for me because it talks about the history of racism and how it is has changed over time. It also explains how a person's social and moral traits are predetermined by their biological characteristics. This article gives examples of different kinds of racism, such as, slavery. I think this article is bias because it discusses more than one issue. I think it is a credible source because it talks a lot about how racism started. Its going to help me a lot with my project because it gave me information that I didn't have yet that I needed to complete my project.

LaBoe, Barbara. "Welcome!" Longview Daily News. N.p., 27 Jan. 2009. Web. 28 Apr. 2013.
This article was helpful because it talks about a real life story of a young African American boy that got a rock thrown at him by a white teenager. It made me realize how bad racism is and that it needs to stop. It explains how outraged and and hurt his family and his community were after hearing about it. I think this article is unbiased because it only talks about the story of one person, not multiple. I think this is a credible source because people can relate to it and people will understand that racism is a bad thing in our society. I think this information will help me with my research because it gave me a better understanding of how hurt people are because of this issue.

Television Show/Episode-
Remember the Titans. "Quotes." IMDb. IMDb.com, 2000. Web. 01 May 2013.
This source was helpful for me because it gave me good examples of racism in movies. This website shows many good resources available to me that identified my topic, racism, in the movie "Remember the Titans". I think this article is unbiased because it only shows quotes from one movie and not others. I think this is a credible source because it portrayed social injustices that occurred with the characters throughout the movie, reflecting at that time in history. I think this will help me with the rest of my project because it gave me an example of how racism is reflected in movies.

Fiction Book/Film-
Hairspray. New York: Stage Entertainment, 2002. Print.
This source was helpful for me because it talked about racism in the 60's. It also talks about how racism is portrayed in the movie hairspray. Some examples that it discussed was when schools desegregated and the "white flight" occured. One other example it talks about is how whites controled the political and social institutions. I think this source is bias because it discusses all the different events that happened in the 60's.I believe this is a credible source because it shows these issues in the movie "Hairspray" and Hairspray is a very popular movie that a lot of people know about. This information will help me with my research because it gave me many different conflicts that happened in the 60's.

Fictional Book/Film

This is my informational poster that I made based on the fictional movie, Hairspray.

Articles

Scolar Articles:
This article talks about experiences of racial inequalities that children and adolescents face in their everyday life. It also addresses the different social worlds that teens of diverse racial and ethnic groups experience. One part of the article that I read discusses how American teens deal with conflicts with their parents, the pressures they face from other teens, their school experiences, and their religious beliefs. After I finished reading this aricle I realized that these experiences are going to have a significant impact on teens adult lives and also their potential for social mobility. It also made me think that if people directly confronted this topic than we would have a better understanding of inequality in American life.
In this article it focuses on mixed race and inter-ethnic families that explores their understandings of race, nation and culture, and interrrogates. It talks about the influences that television and photographs have on children's ideas about race. Another thing it addresses is how children use their memories and stories to talk about the racial differences in their own families. This article does a good job of portraying the effectiveness of teaching in schools and the parental concerns over social mobility and social acceptability of their children. It states that social scientists today claim that we now live in a "post-race" society, where "race" has been replaced by ethnicity.

This article demonstrates the ways minority groups create and maintain collective identities and action. It also explains the relationships between racism in schools and unemployment. One problem it talked about is the ways social deprivation is different from racial/class status. This article discusses the West Indian involvement and how their academic activities are analysed. Another thing that the article addresses is how teens educational experiences are different from class and gender groups.

News Articles:
This article tells the story of a 15 year old boy named Seth that had a rock hurled at him by a white teenager. Seth, who is a mixed black, white and American Indian, has been called names before but that was the first time he was associated with violence because of his race. He was very shocked and didn't expect something like that would happen to him. After this story came out people were outraged and hurt. I think this story is important because our society needs to take a stand about these kind of things. It made me think that  victims of these incidents are not people that are different, they are just like us.

In this article it talks about the history of racism and how it has changed over time. It gives examples of racism such as slavery, which was later accomplished. It also explains the important features of racism. One feature it discussed was peoples attitudes regarding slaves and slavery. It stated that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics. One more element that it discussed was racial separatism and how different races should remain segregated and apart from one another.

Running Thesis Statements

#1. Today teenagers are the most racially diverse group of Americans in history. Young people today are also more racially tolerant than any previous generation. More of them are growing up in multicultural households than ever before.

#2. In the 1950's the Brown vs. The Board of Education case ruled that racial segregation of schools was illegal and racial prejudice remains very much a part of life in America for many young people.

#3. At the white schools, the buildings, textbooks, playground equipment, and even the chalk for the blackboards were good quality. At the black schools, the books were likely to be out of date, educational materials were scarce, and the facilities were often in need of repair.

Television Show/Episode

Quotes from the Movie Remember the Titans

“People say that it can't work, black and white. Here, we make it work every day. We still have our disagreements, of course, but before we reach for hate, always, always, we remember the Titans.”

"Tonight we've got Hayfield. Like all the other schools in this conference, they're all white. They don't have to worry about race. We do. let me tell you something: you don't let anyone come between us. Nothing tears us apart. In Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the gods. They ruled their universe with absolute power. Well that football field out there, that's our universe. Let's rule it like titans.”

"Now I may be a mean cuss. But I'm the same mean cuss with everybody out there on that football field. The world don't give a damn about how sensitive these kids are, especially the young black kids. You ain't doin' these kids a favor by patronizing them. You crippling them; You crippling them for life.”
Big Ju: What you doin' man
Louie Lastik: Eatin' Lunch
Big Ju: I see you eatin' lunch, but why you eatin' over here? Why not go eat over there and eat with your people?
Louie Lastik: Man, I don't have any people. I'm with everybody, Julius.
Petey Jones: Yeah, he's just a light-skinned brother.
Big Ju: Yeah, and I'm a dark-skinned cracker.
Petey: [laughs]
Jerry 'Rev' Harris: Come on Julius, he's just another blessed child in God's lovin' family.
Blue Stanton: [Blue starts to hum]
Big Ju: Come on, Blue. Let me...
Petey Jones: [Petey joins in with Blue]
Jerry 'Rev' Harris: God, we come before you today. To ask you to soften Big Julius Cambell's heart.

Bertier: Well, you think I look banged up, you should see my Camaro.
Big Ju: Man, I sure am sorry, man. I should have been there with you.
Bertier: What are you talking about? You would've been in that bed right next to me.
Big Ju: You can't be hurt like this. You - you're Superman.
Bertier: I was afraid of you, Julius. I only saw what I was afraid of, and now I know I was only hating my brother.
Big Ju: I'll tell you what, though. Um, when all this is over... me and you are gonna move out to the same neighborhood together. OK? And, um... and we'll get old, and we'll get fat. And there ain't gonna be all this black-white between us.
Bertier: [Chuckles] Left side.
Big Ju: Strong side.

Mid Research Review

Mid-Research Review

My topic for this Capstone project is racism. I have been researching different ways racism can affect our teens today. As I researched I came across some very interesting stories and facts about this topic.

After reading a nonfiction book, watching a documentary, and reading 5 different articles I began to realize the topic of racism is a major issue in our young society today. Some of the information I gathered talks about how today teenagers are the most diverse group of young Americans in history. “They are more racially tolerant than any previous generations.” (The Gallup Youth Survey: Teens and Race).  I also found that more teens are growing up in multicultural households than ever before. I find my topic to be more unfocused because there are so many different aspects of racism.

Once I finished gathering information from the three checkpoints I found that they all talk about the same issues. One big issue that they addressed was how racism affects teens in schools. In the book, Gallup Youth Survey: Teens and Race, it states “Many minorities live in urban communities where schools are not as well funded as those in more-affluent suburban areas. As a result there is a difference between the educations of whites and of minorities.” In the documentary I found it demonstrates how teenage girls rate each other on their appearance such as their skin, hair, clothes, etc. Also in one of the articles I read it talks about how schools made black children walk to school while white children got to ride the bus.

Based on the information that I have already gathered regarding how racism impacts minority I would suspect minority people have disadvantages in the work force. It is a reasonable conclusion that people of minority are less likely to obtain high paying jobs if they did not have the opportunity of quality education. I think this will help me understand my topic more because it will give me another example of how people are treated differently in our society based on their race.

After all the research I have found I think racism is a huge issue in our society that we need to change. It has been a societal issue for centuries that has dramatically devastating effects on many people. Although we appear to be fighting an uphill battle, young people in our society are making positive gains and being more inclusive and tolerant of diversity.

Nonfiction Book

1.   A summary of your text (or chapters/articles you read from your text).   This should be at least 3-5 solid paragraphs.

The book Teens and Race is about the most important issues affecting teenagers and their race today. It addresses how it impacts teen’s personal relationships, their environment and their community.
One section I read was about how diverse the generation of teens are today in America. It talks about how more teens are growing up in multiracial households than ever before. It also states that young people today are more willing to accept members of other races as equals. Are generation today has become more educated about race and is more inclusive which is why are teens today are more excepting of other races.
Another section I read addresses interracial relationships and how they are more common today than at any time in past U.S. history. Today, Americans, particularly young Americans, are much more tolerant of interracial dating. Many interracial couples work harder at communicating and understanding each other than same-race couples. But the difficulties that interracial couples face may help them grow closer.
One more section I read was about teens growing up biracial. It said that some teens may be confused about their “ethnic identity”. Children of an interracial marriage struggle to find a group of peers with whom they can identify. Young biracial children know they are different from their friends, and they know their parents are different from their friends’ parents.
After reading this book I learned that it is important for people to respect each other no matter what race, ethnicity, culture, or sexual orientation they are. By doing this it will have a positive impact on our society.

2.   At least 3 key passages from your text (cited by page number).

“Opinion polls clearly show that young people today are more willing to accept members of other races as equals; they are eager to make friends with them, date them, sit in the same classrooms with them, share their music and other facets of their cultures, and ultimately, start families with them.” (Page 9)
“By the 1990’s, blacks and whites in the United States were sitting in the same classrooms, using the same textbooks, riding together on the same school buses, and eating in the same school cafeterias.” (Page 36)
“What is my race? As young children, the sons and daughters of biracial marriages often turn to their mothers and fathers to help them with the answers. Young biracial children know they are different from their friends, and they know their parents are different from their friends’ parents.” (Page 49)

3.   At least 5 thought-provoking questions that allow readers of your page to think about the topic you have chosen in relation to your nonfiction book and the world around us.

            1. Do you fell that racial minorities in this country have equal job opportunities with
               whites?
            2. How would you rate the state of race relations in the United States today?
            3. Do you think public schools should offer classes on race relations as required
instruction, should offer the classes as electives that are not required, or should
not teach classes on race relations at all?
4. How widespread do you believe the problem of racism against blacks among police officers is in this country?
5. Do you think affirmative action has been good for the country, or do you think it has not been good?

4.   A citation for your nonfiction book. Use Easybib.com if necessary.
Marcovitz, Hal. Teens and Race. Broomall: Mason Crest, 2004. Print

 5.   Include a picture(s) (one that you created or composed) on the page that relates to the book you have chosen.

6.   Finally, include a section on how this particular book has guided or fits in with the issue you have chosen to work with for this project.

The section I read in the book Teens and Race fits in with the issue that I chose to work with because it talks about how teens today are more willing to accept others of different race as equals. It also talks about how young biracial children recognize that they are different from their friends and people they see in their everyday life.
